Shanghai older and primarily domestic airport, well-connected to the city center.
Why "SHA"?
SHA stands for Shanghai, China s largest city and financial center. Hongqiao (meaning Rainbow Bridge) is the city s older, closer-to-downtown airport primarily serving domestic flights, while Pudong (PVG) handles most international traffic.
Terminals
Terminal 1
Terminal 1 is the original terminal, renovated in 2010. It handles select domestic flights and limited international/regional services to Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Smaller and more manageable than Terminal 2 with adequate dining and shopping. Connected to Terminal 2 via free shuttle bus.
Terminal 2
Terminal 2 opened in 2010 and is the main terminal handling the majority of flights. Modern design integrated with Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station for seamless air-rail transfers. The country s best-connected transportation hub with metro, high-speed rail, and long-distance buses all accessible within the complex.
Terminal 2 - Concourse A
Concourse A of Terminal 2 handles China Eastern domestic flights and Shanghai Airlines services. Features dedicated lounges and a good selection of Shanghai cuisine restaurants.
Terminal 2 - Concourse D
Concourse D handles Air China, China Southern, and other carrier domestic flights. Connected to Concourse A post-security. Features the Airport VIP lounge and several food options.

Walk The Bund at Night
The Bund waterfront is Shanghai s most iconic sight - colonial architecture on one side and the futuristic Pudong skyline on the other. Best after 6 PM when everything is illuminated. Take Metro Line 2 directly from the airport (40 min). Free to walk. Combine with Nanjing Road shopping.
Visit Shanghai Museum (People s Square)
One of China s finest museums with free entry. World-class collection of bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, and jade spanning Chinese civilization. Located at People s Square, 30 minutes by Metro Line 2 from the airport. Reserve free tickets online. Allow 2 hours for a thorough visit.
Explore Zhujiajiao Water Town
Zhujiajiao is an ancient water town just 30 minutes from Hongqiao by taxi. Wander through 400-year-old streets, cross stone bridges over canals, take a gondola ride (CNY 10), and sample local snacks like zongzi (rice dumplings). Entry to some sights requires tickets (CNY 30-80).
Day Trip to Hangzhou by HSR
Hangzhou, famous for West Lake and tea plantations, is just 45 minutes from Hongqiao by high-speed rail. The railway station is a 10-minute walk from Terminal 2. Visit West Lake (free), Lingyin Temple, and try Longjing green tea. HSR ticket CNY 73 each way. Perfect for long layovers.
