The historic Walled City area with the UNESCO-listed Lahore Fort, magnificent Badshahi Mosque, and the Shalimar Gardens nearby.
About Lahore Fort and Badshahi Mosque
Directly opposite the fort's main entrance stands the Badshahi Mosque, built in 1673 by Emperor Aurangzeb and one of the largest mosques in the world. Its vast red sandstone courtyard can hold 100,000 worshippers, and its three massive marble domes and four minarets create one of the most photographed silhouettes in all of Pakistan. The mosque remains an active place of worship, particularly spectacular during Friday prayers and Eid celebrations.
Between the fort and the mosque, the Hazuri Bagh garden contains the marble pavilion of Barakdari, while just beyond lies the Samadhi of Ranjit Singh, the golden-domed mausoleum of the Sikh Empire's founder. This tight cluster of Mughal, Sikh, and British-era monuments forms the historical heart of Lahore and represents the city's layered, multicultural heritage.

Good to Know
Late Night Transport
The area around the fort and Badshahi Mosque is atmospheric at night with illuminated monuments, but transport options diminish after 9:00 PM. Pre-book a ride through Careem or arrange for your taxi to wait. The nearby Food Street (Fort Road) remains busy until midnight with local restaurants offering rooftop views of the illuminated Badshahi Mosque, making evening visits rewarding despite transport challenges.
Luggage Tips
Do not attempt to visit the Lahore Fort area with heavy luggage. The cobblestoned streets of the Walled City are difficult to navigate even without bags. Leave luggage at your hotel or at the airport. The fort entrance area has basic security screening but no luggage storage. Wear comfortable shoes as the fort complex involves extensive walking over uneven stone surfaces.
Accessibility
The Lahore Fort presents significant accessibility challenges with cobblestoned paths, steep stairs to many pavilions, and uneven terrain throughout the complex. The Badshahi Mosque courtyard is flat but accessed via a steep staircase at the entrance (no elevator). Wheelchair users can view the exteriors from the Hazuri Bagh garden. Some areas of the fort's lower level are accessible via gentler slopes.
