Xinjiekou is the commercial heart of Nanjing and the busiest intersection in the city, surrounded by shopping malls, hotels, and restaurants. The Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao) area is nearby.
About Xinjiekou City Center
Nanjing's rich history is everywhere in the city center. The Presidential Palace, just east of Xinjiekou, served as the seat of government for the Republic of China and features beautiful Qing-dynasty gardens. The Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao) area along the Qinhuai River is a lively pedestrian district with traditional architecture, street food vendors, and illuminated canal boats in the evening.
As a former national capital for six dynasties and the Republic of China, Nanjing carries deep historical significance. The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall is a sobering but essential visit, while the massive Ming Dynasty city walls — the longest ancient city walls in the world — still encircle much of the old city. Purple Mountain (Zijinshan) to the east holds the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and Ming Xiaoling tomb within its forested slopes.
