About NRT
Narita International Airport is one of two major airports serving the Greater Tokyo area, located approximately 60 kilometers east of central Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture. Opened in 1978 after years of controversy and protest, Narita was designed to handle the international traffic that had outgrown Haneda Airport. The airport features three terminals: Terminal 1 for traditional carriers, Terminal 2 for ANA and its partners, and Terminal 3 for low-cost carriers. While Haneda has reclaimed much international traffic, Narita remains a critical hub for many international flights, particularly cargo operations and long-haul routes to North America and Europe.
Why "NRT"?
NRT is the IATA code from Narita, the city in Chiba Prefecture where the airport is located, about 60 km east of central Tokyo.

Insider Tips
Narita is far from Tokyo (60 km) - don't underestimate travel time. Buy a Japan Rail Pass before arrival if planning to travel around Japan. The Keisei Skyliner is slightly cheaper and faster than N'EX for getting to eastern Tokyo. T3 (LCC) is a 15-minute walk from T2 - follow the running track-style floor. Get a Suica/Pasmo IC card at the station for easy train and bus payments. Don't tip - it's not Japanese custom. 7-Eleven ATMs are the most reliable for foreign cards.
