About TPE
Taiwan main international gateway and a hub for China Airlines and EVA Air.
Why "TPE"?
TPE stands for Taipei, the capital city that the airport primarily serves. Although the airport is physically located in Taoyuan City about 40 km west of Taipei, it carries the Taipei code as the main international gateway to the capital.
Terminals
Terminal 1
Terminal 1 opened in 1979 and has undergone multiple renovations, most recently in 2013. It features a spacious design with ample natural light, extensive duty-free shopping, and a variety of Taiwanese and international dining options. Terminal 1 handles a mix of airlines including several full-service Asian carriers.
Terminal 2
Terminal 2 opened in 2000 and serves as the primary hub for China Airlines. It was expanded in 2018 with new boarding gates and an enhanced duty-free shopping area. The terminal features modern Taiwanese design elements and the popular Hello Kitty themed check-in counters for EVA Air.
Terminal 1 Concourse A
Concourse A in Terminal 1 handles primarily Northeast Asian routes. Features several premium lounges and a traditional Taiwanese culture exhibition space near Gate A4.
Terminal 1 Concourse D
Concourse D serves Southeast Asian and other international routes. Connected to the main terminal by moving walkways. Good selection of local snack shops.

Compact but elegant lounge in Terminal 1 with Singapore Airlines' signature service standards. Good selection of Asian and Western dishes, premium spirits, and comfortable seating.
Plaza Premium Lounge (T1)
Popular independent lounge in Terminal 1 with live cooking station serving Taiwanese favorites, shower rooms, rest zone, and business facilities. Well-maintained with consistently good service.
Plaza Premium Lounge (T2)
Terminal 2 location with similar offerings to T1 including hot Taiwanese food, showers, and rest area. Slightly smaller but less crowded. Great noodle bar.

Airport Free Massage Service
Taoyuan Airport offers free massage chairs in both terminals in designated rest areas. Coin-operated massage chairs are also available throughout the terminal for TWD 10 per session. A great way to unwind without spending much during a short layover.
Explore Terminal Culture Exhibitions
Both terminals feature rotating cultural exhibitions showcasing Taiwanese art, indigenous culture, and traditional crafts. Terminal 1 has a Taiwanese Culture Experience Zone near Gate B area with interactive displays. Terminal 2 features contemporary art installations. All free to visit.
Taiwanese Tea Tasting Experience
Visit the tea shops in the duty-free area to sample premium Taiwanese teas including Alishan High Mountain Oolong, Dong Ding Oolong, and Oriental Beauty. Some shops offer formal gongfu tea tastings. Purchase teas as gifts - Taiwan produces some of the world's finest oolongs.

Visit Taipei 101 Observatory
Take the Airport MRT Express to Taipei and visit the iconic 508-meter Taipei 101 tower. The observation deck on the 89th floor offers stunning 360-degree views of the Taipei basin. Allow 35 minutes each way for travel plus 1-2 hours at the tower. Entry fee TWD 600 (USD 18).
Night Market Food Tour (Shilin)
Shilin Night Market is Taipei's most famous night market (open from 4 PM). Try stinky tofu, oyster omelette, pepper buns, bubble tea, and grilled squid. Take Airport MRT to Taipei Main Station then transfer to Red Line. Budget TWD 300-500 for extensive tasting. Best for evening layovers.
Day Trip to Jiufen Old Street
The enchanting hillside town of Jiufen inspired the Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away. Narrow alleys lined with tea houses, snack shops, and stunning ocean views. Take bus from Taipei to Jiufen (90 min). Allow 7+ hours for the full round trip from the airport including MRT to Taipei.
