About Lake Como (Como)

Lake Como (Lago di Como) is a deep, glacial lake set among dramatic pre-Alpine mountains, its shores lined with centuries-old villas, gardens, and pastel-painted villages that have attracted aristocrats, artists, and celebrities since Roman times. The lake's distinctive inverted-Y shape creates three branches, each with its own character, all surrounded by mountains rising steeply from the water's edge.

The town of Como sits at the southwestern tip of the lake, featuring a medieval walled old town, the Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral (Duomo) with its ornate marble façade, and the Brunate funicular — a steep railway climbing to a hilltop village offering one of the most spectacular lake panoramas in all of Italy. The lakefront promenade, lined with neo-classical temples, gardens, and ferry terminals, is where the dolce vita is lived.

The lake's most famous stretch runs from Bellagio (the 'Pearl of the Lake,' perched on the promontory where the three branches meet) to Varenna (a colorful fishing village), with the grand villas of Tremezzo and Lenno between them. Villa del Balbianello, a terraced garden villa on a wooded promontory, has appeared in films from James Bond to Star Wars, while Villa Carlotta houses a botanical garden and art collection. George Clooney's estate in Laglio has added modern celebrity cachet to the lake's timeless allure.

Good to Know

Late Night Transport

The last trains from Milan to Como run until approximately 11:30 PM. Como's old town has restaurants open until 10:00-11:00 PM. Ferry services on the lake end by early evening (around 7:00 PM, later in peak summer). For villages accessible only by ferry (Bellagio, Varenna), plan to return before the last boat. Taxis in Como can be pre-booked. There are very limited transport options on the lake after dark.

Luggage Tips

If heading to lakeside towns, pack light. Ferries can be crowded in summer, and villages like Bellagio and Varenna involve cobblestone streets and steep staircases. Como town has luggage storage at the train station. Hotels along the lake often have narrow entrances in historic buildings. The Malpensa Express to Milan, then regional train to Como San Giovanni or Como Nord, can accommodate luggage in vestibule areas.

Accessibility

Como town center is partially accessible, with the lakefront promenade flat and wheelchair-friendly. The Brunate funicular is not wheelchair accessible. Lakeside villages (Bellagio, Varenna) present significant challenges with steep, cobblestoned streets and stairs. Ferries have accessible boarding at some piers (Como, Bellagio main pier) but not all. Villa Carlotta gardens have accessible paths on the lower levels. Hotels vary greatly in accessibility — luxury hotels tend to be better equipped.
