The largest ancient castle complex in the world and seat of Czech government. Stunning views over the city.
About Prague Castle (Hradčany)
Within the castle grounds, St. Vitus Cathedral soars with its Gothic spires and stained glass windows (including a stunning Art Nouveau window by Alphonse Mucha). The Old Royal Palace contains the famous Vladislav Hall, while the charming Golden Lane — a row of tiny, colorful houses built into the castle fortifications — includes the house where Franz Kafka briefly lived and wrote. The castle gardens offer panoramic views over Prague's red-tiled rooftops and the Vltava River.
The surrounding Hradčany quarter is a quiet, aristocratic neighborhood of palaces, churches, and monastery gardens. The Strahov Monastery houses one of the world's most beautiful Baroque libraries. The Loreta, with its ornate cloisters and diamond monstrance, is a significant pilgrimage site. Nový Svět, a hidden cobblestoned lane, feels like a secret village frozen in time.

Accessibility

The castle information center can advise on the most accessible routes. Tram 22 to Pražský hrad stop avoids the steep hill climb.
