The largest ancient castle complex in the world and seat of Czech government. Stunning views over the city.

About Prague Castle (Hradčany)

Prague Castle (Pražský hrad) dominates the city from its hilltop position in the Hradčany district, forming one of the most impressive castle complexes in the world. Dating from the 9th century and spanning 70,000 square meters, it is the largest coherent castle complex on Earth and has served as the seat of Czech rulers for over a millennium — it remains the official residence of the Czech president.

Within the castle grounds, St. Vitus Cathedral soars with its Gothic spires and stained glass windows (including a stunning Art Nouveau window by Alphonse Mucha). The Old Royal Palace contains the famous Vladislav Hall, while the charming Golden Lane — a row of tiny, colorful houses built into the castle fortifications — includes the house where Franz Kafka briefly lived and wrote. The castle gardens offer panoramic views over Prague's red-tiled rooftops and the Vltava River.

The surrounding Hradčany quarter is a quiet, aristocratic neighborhood of palaces, churches, and monastery gardens. The Strahov Monastery houses one of the world's most beautiful Baroque libraries. The Loreta, with its ornate cloisters and diamond monstrance, is a significant pilgrimage site. Nový Svět, a hidden cobblestoned lane, feels like a secret village frozen in time.

Accessibility
